Top Reads of the Week: The Dawn of a New A(I)ge

Since the beginning, humans have always been fascinated with technology and all the possibilities it could bring.

Our imagination have brought us to conjure up our own versions of how technology could change and transform the world: older classics like Tron (1982), The Terminator (1984) and The Matrix (1999) caution us of a dystopian future filled with scary, deadly machines that dominate our worlds and overrule humans. Extreme perhaps, but it revealed the fear we held towards these machines that exhibited intelligence, could perceive their environment and take actions/make decisions to maximise chance of success at a goal.

That evolved over the years to robotic characters with “emotions”, conscience and an ability to converse and/or connect with us. Instead of being bringers of doom, AI became our friends and allies. As seen in Robot and Frank (2012), old man Frank found companionship in his care robot. The same was for Jim Preston in Passengers (2016) as he sought comfort in his android bartender (and confidante).

These stories, albeit extreme, helps us imagine a future where technology has become integral to life and has replaced areas or things unique to humans.

It is likely that almost every aspect of our lives will eventually be integrated (or infiltrated) with technology. Fact is, some of these AI technologies are already being used widely. For example, Siri employs natural language processing and voice recognition technology. Most websites now have automated chatbots to assist with customer service. All these point towards the dawn of a new age – the AI age.

According to Accenture's Technology Vision 2017, professionals are anticipating and responding to this upcoming shift:

Up to 85% of business and IT executives expect to make extensive investments in one or more AI-related technologies over the next three years.

As AI revolutionises the business landscape and model, it would be wise to keep track and adapt to this new business reality. In this week’s digest, we learn how to employ technology in talent management and recruitment processes and read about considerations and responsibilities that might come with using AI.

Drawing from their experience with multiple firms’ talent tech experiments, Herminia Ibarra and Patrick Petitti have learnt five core lessons from the firms that seem to be positioning themselves most effectively to reap the benefits of technology.

Companies and governments increasingly rely upon algorithms to make decisions that affect people’s lives and livelihoods – from loan approvals, to recruiting, legal sentencing, and college admissions.

But experts have petitioned for greater transparency, but how transparent should we be? The article lends good insight into weighing the repercussions of implementing technology/AI into originally human aspects like decision making.

Speaking in a webinar detailing how SmartRecruiters’ SmartAssistant, the industry’s first native AI-powered recruiting tool, Hessam Lavi stressed five ways he sees AI technology providing the backbone for recruiting in the future.

As busy professionals, our schedules are often filled to the brim with meetings and tasks to complete. We can get so caught up with work that we might even forget our all-important lunch and power through dinner as well. Alas, we can only do so much given the 24 hours we have in a day. While time management is vital, being productive is another matter in its entirety.Enter time batching.
