My Top Reads of the Past Week: Diversity, Tech and HR

Articles on Diversity and #pressforprogress have been dominating the web. For obvious reasons, the focus lies especially on the tech industry. 76% of technical jobs are held by men, 95% of the tech workforce is white. Technology infiltrates every aspect of our live. It determines how we work, how we communicate and how we think. We will need a diverse demographic to have control over the development of this fundamental source of influence. As a Forbes article stated: "A lack of diverse ideas and representation could lead to further disparities between gender, race, and class."

I curated a list with the most interesting articles from last week on how to minimise unconscious bias in HR, how technology companies alienate women in recruiting sessions, how to prioritise diversity in Tech and the impact on gender equality in your company on talent attrition.

  1. Nine Strategies To Keep Unconscious Bias Out Of Your HR Department

While you can't fully eliminate unconscious biases, it is absolutely crucial that you become aware of them, and actively work to keep them out of your leadership and decision-making. Nine members of Forbes Human Resources Council share their best strategies for keeping biases at bay in your organization.

2. Unwelcoming recruiting practices could be keeping women away from STEM fields

Company representatives are creating a "chilly environment" for female STEM job candidates, according to a report from two Stanford University researchers. The report, "Puncturing the pipeline: Do technology companies alienate women in recruiting sessions?," examines the recruitment processes most companies follow when they meet with students on campus.

3. It's Time to Prioritize Diversity Across Tech

One industry where the need for diverse representation and hiring is apparent is technology. Technology impacts and is used by us every almost hour of every day. Currently, men hold 76% of technical jobs, and 95% of the tech workforce is white.

4. 80 Percent Women Willing to Switch Jobs for Companies that Offer Better Gender Equality

A majority of employees (78 percent) say that it is important to be in an inclusive workplace where people are treated equally regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, age, race or religion, according to recent study findings released by Randstad US.

BONUS: Uber exec: White men need to 'make noise' about diversity

Uber, like most tech companies, is working to diversify its workforce. Its first diversity report, released in March 2017, showed that Uber had no technical leaders who are black or Hispanic. Among non-technical leadership positions, 3.7% were black and 1.2% were Hispanic.

Saint John said the onus should not be on people of color to improve diversity at work: "Why do I - as the black woman - have to fix that? There's 50 of you, there's one of me. Ya'll fix it. ... Everybody else needs to make the noise - I want white men to make the noise."

While time management is vital, being productive is another matter in its entirety.Enter time batching.
